Reading instruction at LACS

At Los Altos Christian School, we’re committed to a thoughtful, research-based approach to teaching reading that helps each child build a strong, lasting foundation. We understand that reading doesn’t come automatically; it’s a skill developed step-by-step with intentional support and practice. Here’s what that looks like in our TK and Kindergarten programs:

  1. A Solid Reading Foundation
We use a structured approach to literacy, where essential skills like phonics and word recognition are taught in a clear, step-by-step way. This helps our youngest readers develop confidence and solid skills right from the start.
  2. Teachers Who Are Well-Trained
They’re equipped to help every child grow and thrive as a reader, using methods that really work.
  3. Focus on Key Early Literacy Skills
We emphasize the core skills that make great readers: recognizing sounds, building vocabulary, and developing comprehension. By focusing on these essentials, we ensure each child has the tools they need for a successful reading journey.
  4. Regular Check-Ins on Progress
We keep a close eye on each student’s growth, with assessments that guide us in personalizing instruction. This means your child receives the right kind of support to grow at their own pace.
  5. A Literacy-Rich Classroom
Our classrooms are filled with age-appropriate books and materials that make reading engaging and fun. We want students to feel excited about reading from the beginning, through group activities, read-alouds, and independent exploration.
