Mrs. Goff's Window: A Weekly Newsletter from our Principal

This past week brought me fun, caution, and information. Let me get the caution part out of the way first.  The big caution for me was going into the third grade classroom while the Reptile Man was there! Students with snakes draped around their necks were close to the door as I entered. So I did a quick in and out. Give me spiders any day, snakes scare me to pieces! As a school we practiced caution with having a code red drill. This drill prepares us in the event a gunman or terrorist should come on campus. We want the children to be as safe as possible. All the classes were quiet, barricaded in their rooms, and calm. I was proud of everyone.  We can pray that we will never have to perform code red in real life, but we are ready.

For fun I attended the boys’ basketball game against San Jose Christian School. We won!! I also enjoyed the fifth grade Walk Thru the Revolutionary War. The students had very authentic costumes and knew their parts well. The fourth grade parents fed the staff a wonderful luncheon on Thursday with soups, salads, and desserts. Parents, the staff appreciates the luncheons immensely. We all feel so privileged to work with such encouraging, supportive parents. The kindergarten has a new rug for the students. It has bright colored squares and makes the room look bright and happy. Thank you PTF for supplying that to the kindergarten.

For information I visited more math classes. In second grade math, the students worked on subtraction and the 2LAD were working with cubes on place value. In third grade they spent time on word problems with multiple operations. The class spent a lot of time on this difficult concept, working on their individual white boards. Mrs. Bryant’s fourth grade class used large dice to study probability. The Intro to Algebra class was solving percentage problems using equations. They discussed the “real-life” issues of commissions and royalties. Jeffrey Gottfurcht visited the first grade classrooms to inform them about the climb he is on right now. Jeff is in Argentina climbing Mt. Aconcagua.  I was thrilled when he gave the school the ice pick he used on Mt. Everest last year. Last night I attended the parent meeting on executive functioning with Dr. John Brentar, the executive director of Morrissey-Compton Educational Center. Thank you for the great turnout of parents. We learned what executive functioning is and how to help our students gain these important skills. This morning I observed the fifth grade in library. They were presenting their Dewey Decimal System projects. I learned that Mr. Dewey was only 21 years old when he invented the system.

Prayer:
--Pray for continued health concerns for some of our parents
--Pray for Jeffrey Gottfurcht as he climbs Mt. Aconcagua.
--Pray for Mrs. Swanson’s health and recovery.

--I want to welcome a new student to LACS. Emma Sahbari is in the second grade and we are thrilled to have her and her family as part of our school family.

Chapel:
--Three middle school students presented a play on Psalm 23 in elementary chapel.
--Middle school finished watching “Soul Surfer” in chapel.

Out and About:
